Plumbers should be supporting the Obama tax plan

Words of wisdom...

Plumbers should be supporting the Obama tax plan

By Paul Krugman

Forty years ago, Richard Nixon made a remarkable marketing discovery. By exploiting America's divisions — divisions over Vietnam, divisions over cultural change and, above all, racial divisions — he was able to reinvent the Republican brand.

The party of plutocrats was repackaged as the party of the "silent majority," the regular guys — white guys, it went without saying — who didn't like the social changes taking place. It was a winning formula. And the great thing was that the new packaging didn't require any change in the product's actual contents — in fact, the GOP was able to keep winning elections even as its actual policies became more pro-plutocrat, and less favorable to working Americans, than ever.

John McCain's strategy, in this final stretch, is based on the belief that the old formula still has life in it.Thus we have Sarah Palin expressing her joy at visiting the "pro-America" parts of the country — yep, we're all traitors here in central New Jersey.

Meanwhile we've got McCain making Samuel J. Wurzelbacher, aka Joe the Plumber — who had confronted Barack Obama on the campaign trail, alleging that the Democratic candidate would raise his taxes — the centerpiece of his attack on Obama's economic proposals. And when it turned out that the right's new icon has a few issues, like not being licensed and comparing Obama to Sammy Davis Jr., conservatives played victim: See how much those snooty elitists hate the common man? But what's really happening to the plumbers of Ohio, and to working Americans in general?

First of all, they aren't making a lot of money. You may recall that in one of the early Democratic debates Charles Gibson of ABC suggested that $200,000 a year was a middle-class income. Tell that to Ohio plumbers: According to the May 2007 occupational earnings report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual income of "plumbers, pipe fitters and steamfitters" in Ohio was $47,930.Second, their real incomes have stagnated or fallen, even in supposedly good years.

The Bush administration assured us that the economy was booming in 2007 — but the average Ohio plumber's income in that 2007 report was only 15.5 percent higher than in the 2000 report, not enough to keep up with the 17.7 percent rise in consumer prices in the Midwest.
As Ohio plumbers went, so went the nation: Median household income, adjusted for inflation, was lower in 2007 than it had been in 2000.

Third, Ohio plumbers have been having growing trouble getting health insurance, especially if, like many craftsmen, they work for small firms. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, in 2007 only 45 percent of companies with fewer than 10 employees offered health benefits, down from 57 percent in 2000.And bear in mind that all these data pertain to 2007 — which was as good as it got in recent years. Now that the "Bush boom," such as it was, is over, we can see that it achieved a dismal distinction: For the first time on record, an economic expansion failed to raise most Americans' incomes above their previous peak.

Since then, of course, things have gone rapidly downhill, as millions of working Americans have lost their jobs and their homes. And all indicators suggest that things will get much worse in the months and years ahead.

So what does all this say about the candidates? Who's really standing up for Ohio's plumbers?

McCain claims that Obama's policies would lead to economic disaster. But President Bush's policies have already led to disaster — and whatever he may say, McCain proposes continuing Bush's policies in all essential respects, and he shares Bush's anti-government, anti-regulation philosophy. What about the claim, based on Joe the Plumber's complaint, that ordinary working Americans would face higher taxes under Obama?

Well, Obama proposes raising rates on only the top two income tax brackets — and the second-highest bracket for a head of household starts at an income, after deductions, of $182,400 a year.Maybe there are plumbers out there who earn that much, or who would end up suffering from Obama's proposed modest increases in taxes on dividends and capital gains — America is a big country, and there's probably a high-income plumber with a huge stock market portfolio out there somewhere. But the typical plumber would pay lower, not higher taxes under an Obama administration, and would have a much better chance of getting health insurance.

I don't want to suggest that everyone would be better off under the Obama tax plan. Joe the plumber would almost certainly be better off, but Richie the hedge-fund manager would take a serious hit.But that's the point. Whatever today's GOP is, it isn't the party of working Americans.

Chris Matthews Grills Dan Lundgren (R) On Palin's Leadership

Tuesday, October 14, 2008
Tonight on the Chris Matthews Show, Chris asked Republican Congressman Dan Lundgren if he was comfortable with Sarah Palin being the Commander in Chief. Chris had to ask Lundgren 4 times before he finally said yes. This is a person who was on the show speaking for the McCain Campaign and it took him four times to finally voice his support. Easy yes or no answer and he tried to dodge it talking about Obama and Biden.

Sad...

McCain's Top Economic Advisor In CNN's Top 10 Economy Bad Guys

Right now CNN has the 10 most wanted list of culprits responsible for the economic crisis. Phil Gramm, John McCains top economic advisor is number 4 on that list.

John McCain says he will change the economy.

I don't doubt that at all.

Your honor I rest my case...

Article about economy related suicides. Really sad...

House GOP objects to spending in $150 billion stimulus package

Of course they object, because the majority of the money would go to help actual people and not banks and corporations. Republicans do not vote in the economic interests of regular people. When are people going to wake up and realize this. Just look at how Republicans vote, they have not been hiding it well. So if there is no money in for their friends in business, it is not worth their vote. The Middle class and poor people that vote Republican are only hurting themselves and the rest of us.

Deal's Collapses, McCain Attacks

Monday, September 29, 2008

Good article. I have said enough about it already. But he outlines more of the facts.

Where Is The Republican Leadership?

The Republicans came up with a bailout plan. Other Republicans hated that bill and wanted another bill. The whole time asking the Democrats to support it as well. Well the President, the House Leader all said that thanks to John McCains leadership the Republicans would be supporting a modified version of their two bills.

All the Republican leaders and spokespersons were on the airwaves this morning praising John McCains leadership in getting house Republicans to support (their) bill and save America. Well after all that Leadership they voted against their own bill. So the President doesn't speak for them, The House leader doesn't seem to speak for them and John McCain doesn't seem to be speaking for them either. They came up with a bill demanded Democrats support it, and then a majority of them vote against it. Oh and then they have the gall to come out and say it was because of Nancy Pelosi's speech.

So because they didn't like what she says they don't save America? I am really trying to wrap my head around all this because it is just absurd. Was this a ploy to get Democrats to vote for a very unpopular bill? I don't get it. This was a Republican bill Democrats tried to work with them in a bipartisan fashion because our economy depended on it. They then get blamed for the bill failing over a speech after a majority of Republicans voted no on the bill. A bill they wrote and then claimed support for because of John McCain.

It is just twisted. The Republicans just get more and more out there, depending on the stupidity of us voters. Hoping we believe their attacks. They think we are stupid, and their actions totally prove it. If you listen to Pelosi's speech it was not even bad. Does anyone really want to vote in John McCain and keep these jokers in office for more of this crap?

If the supposed leaders don't speak for Republicans, then who does? Who is your leader Republicans? Who speaks for you? Because your "Leaders" supported and voted for the bill. All the while touting their "Leadership" in getting you to support it.

Is it just me? Anyone else notice all this crap? It boggles the mind...

Republican Presidents On The Economy

John McCain Now Backing Surprise New Bailout Plan

Thursday, September 25, 2008

This new plan among other things calls for regulatory relief for businesses. So during a crisis caused by deregulation, the Republicans and McCains new plan now includes more deregulation. Unbelievable, this is becoming such a joke. Like I said before, get your popcorn political theater is here.

McCain Cancels Letterman For Economy; Then Interviews With Katie Couric

Wednesday, September 24, 2008
John McCain canceled David Letterman tonight because he said he had to rush back to Washington to deal with the economy. Well when Letterman was at the point when McCain would of been on his show, he was surprised to find that McCain was in the building taping an interview with Katie Couric. Letterman then asked if he could give McCain a ride to the airport (catching him in a lie). McCain will not be going back to Washington until tomorrow it turns out. Yeah rushing back, no time.

John McCain Can Only Focus On One Thing At A Time

So he is suspending his campaign and wants to cancel the debate, so he can work on the economic crisis. Now this is a great way to get the attention off how he helped cause it, and get the attention off upcoming op-eds about his Keating Five affair.

If he were to be President he would have two wars, the Country, the economy and everything thing else that the President deals with. He would have to deal with these issues at the same time. So if he can't work on this and debate at the same time how can he be President. He has to drop everything and dive in? While other important events are also happening? No, you do what any good leader does, you delegate your time. He is not a good leader so he doesn't get that.

This is not however what he makes it out to be. The press will still cover him and this is just a part or stunt of what will be his ongoing campaign. Shoot they accidentally sent the press their talking points for their people on how to campaign while it is supposedly suspended. It is a joke, he is just trying to show that he is taking leadership. Well a true leader would work on the economy and still have time to debate later in the evening.

Obama is right, now is the time we need to hear what they think more than ever. This is nothing but a political stunt by John McCain to change the conversation about his deregulator status all these years. I hope it backfires on him too.

Finally something I can agree with Republicans on. This bail out is a horrible idea. I hope both parties stand up to Bush on this and say no way.

Chris Matthews Slams Republican Cantor Over Economy

McCain Says People Who Want Regulation "Don't Know Anything About The Economy"

John McCain against regulation is now for it, Plus more McCain Blunders on the economy.

John McCain is such a Maverick that he bucks his own lines... what a feat.

  • Workers Chant Obama After McCain Speech and McCain Bucks his own policy.

  • Regulation is for those who know nothing about economics - John McCain

McCain No Stranger To Tough Times In Economy

The last time our Country was in a large economic crisis caused by lack of regulation, like now, was the Charles Keating Savings & Loan Scandal in the 80's. Like now back then John McCain was a prominent fixture in the headlines. Except then it was because he got caught using his position on the commerce committee to interfere with the regulation and investigation into Keating's scam. McCain along with four other Senators were known as the Keating Five.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Keating Five, google it. Great insight into who he is, what he thinks about regulations, how close he gets to corporations , how he abuses his power, etc. You will find the type of person the Republicans are throwing out for President this year and probably a whole lot more.

Point is, the guy is a criminal. He wasn't young when he did that. He knew what he was doing and I guarantee our problems will be ten-fold with his boys running things. It would be Phil Gramm, Carly Fiorina, Lindsay Grahm and a whole host of other anti-regulation type champions, paving the way for even more abuse. Soon we (US) would be the ones filing bankruptcy. China would be re posessing our National Banks. John McCain would be blaming it on the Democrats and so on and so on.

Fact is the best economies happen under Democratic Presidents. I say we all do our best to make sure that happens in November.

John McCain Will Fix The Economy

Tuesday, September 16, 2008
Well that's what he says, it's not like he would lie or anything...

Obama & McCain On The Economy

McCain wants a commission and Obama wants action and regulation.

McCain a self proclaimed De-Regulator is now stumping regulation...

McCain Wants A 9\11 Commission To The Fix Economy

Brilliant! Utterly and totally brilliant, because those Commissions work so fast and always get results.

The economy is fundamentally strong and we need a 9\11 Commission to fix our 'fundamentally strong' but 'broken' economy.

John McCain on the economy everybody let's give him a hand, or a finger.
