Apology? Why? Our troops are great but there are some who are extreme and that report was true. You can't hide the truth because it might piss off some people. Some of our troops are extreme, especially since we relaxed our requirements for people to join. We have gang members that are soldiers. Hiding the truth helps nothing, even if it is about our troops.

Having been "in", I can tell you that it saddens me that it is such a taboo thing to talk about. The level of brainwashing and hoo-rah bullshit, both from above and from peers, tends to transform many soldiers into blind, flag-waving puppets. The ignorant, baseless liberal-bashing that I heard from people who know better than to talk politics in uniform was foul and common. It took a while for me to even be courageous enough to throw proverbial missiles back in their direction.
And the folks that eat it up only have to be "reminded" that liberals hate the military, and they're jazzed and ready to fight, whether in bars, on the street, or wherever they see one of us nasty little pinko commies.
There's a deer hunting slogan that has been adapted, possibly originally in tongue-in-cheek usage, to our adversaries in the middle east: "if it's brown it's down." I have a fucked up sense of humor, and can see the tongue-in-cheek bit as humorous, albeit crude, but some 19 year old machine gun toting good-ol-boy might simply take it seriously... especially after repetition. THOSE are the people who I can see performing acts of domestic terrorism under the evil mask of republican "patriotism".
And the sad bit is, if it DOES get talked about, it gets brushed off as namby pamby liberal whining about soldiers and their sense of camaraderie.
Idiots.
